Great White Shark cage diving trip  07/07/2007

Hi there everyone, hope you all enjoyed your cage diving excursion with marine dynamics. Below is a list of water conditions and stats about the sharks sighted on your trip, along with the best photos of the day.

Date: 07-07-07

Location:  shark ally mouth

Sea condition: Rough, choppy

Water Temperature: 14.7C

Wind direction: NW

Current direction: SE

Wind speed: 1-4kts

Water visibility: 6m

Cloud coverage: 100%

Water depth: 10.8m

Bait Type: Sardine and skip jack tuna

Arrival time: 10.30AM

No of sharks sighted: 5

Respective individual lengths: <2m, 2.0m, 2.5m, 2.5m, 2.5m

Note: Shark number four stayed around longest giving divers in the cage some great passes. Individuals 2 and 5 were identified as males, number four had distinctive host red parasites on the edge of its dorsal fin. These copepods or sea lice attach and hitch a ride, carrying strings of eggs behind them (see photo). Some excellent shark action with great visibility and multiple sharks passing the cage and spy hopping continuously. many thanks to all, regards.

Bait Type: Sardine and longfin tuna

No of sharks sighted: 8

Respective individual lengths: 2.0m, 3.0m, 2.5m, 2.5m, 3.0m, 3.0m, 3.5m, 2.0m

 

Note:   Despite the rainy weather, great sharks were seen, leading to a fantastic trip.  The second, and third sharks were identified as females.  The fourth, fifth, sixth, and seventh sharks were male.  Unfortunately, we were not able to identify the sex for the first and eighth sharks, which appeared quickly.  Many thanks to all, regards.

Sea condition: Flat calm

Water Temperature: 14.7C

Wind direction: E

Current direction: W

Water visibility: 6-7m

Cloud coverage: 0%

Water depth: 14.5m

Bait Type: Sardine and longfin tuna

Arrival time: 9:20 AM

No of sharks sighted: 4

Respective individual lengths: 1.5m, 2.0m, 2.2m, 2.5m 

 

Note: Spectacular weather led to a fantastic trip for all.  The second and third sharks were identified as females, while the fourth shark was a male.  This fourth shark, in particular, gave great viewing with its horizontal approaches to the bait, and its fiesty attitude.  Many thanks to all, regards.

No of sharks sighted:7

Respective individual lengths: 2.0m, 2.0m, 3.25m, 2.25m, 3.3m, 3.0m, 2.0m

 

Note: Great visibility and sharks led to a fantastic day for all. The first, third, sixth, and seventh sharks were identified as males, while the second and fifth were females.  Unfortunately, we were not able to identify the sex of the fourth shark.  Fantastic lunges towards the bait added to the excitement of the day.  Thanks to all, regards.

Location:  dyer island

Sea condition: flat calm

Water Temperature: 14.3C

Wind direction: E

Current direction:  W

Wind speed: 5 kts

Water visibility: 5-6m

Cloud coverage: 0%

Water depth: 17m

Bait Type: Sardine and longfin tuna

Arrival time: 8:20AM

No of sharks sighted: 8

Respective individual lengths: 2.0m, 2.0m, 2.5m, 3.0m, 3.0m, 3.0m, 2.5m, 3.2m 

Note: An early morning start let to some good viewing of great white predatory behaviour, with the sharks coming up from the depths to strike at the bait and decoy. Three of the sharks seen today where identified as females, and three others where identified as males. shark seven did some exploration of the cage by biting the side. Shark four had a pigmentation mark on its dorsal fin, this shark is thought to be a re-sight from a previous trip. hope all enjoyed, many thanks to all, regards.

Location:  Geldesteen

Sea condition: Moderate/choppy

Water Temperature: 15.1C

Wind direction: NW

Current direction: SE

Wind speed: 20kts

Water visibility: 5-6m

Cloud coverage: 20%

Water depth: 15.4m

Bait Type: Sardine and longfin tuna

Arrival time: 11:45AM

No of sharks sighted: 6

Respective individual lengths: 2.0m, 2.5m, 2.0m, 2.2m, 2.0m, 2.5m
 

Note: Excellent visibility allowed some great viewing form the shark cage. The first individual arrived soon after we anchored and disappeared. Sharks 2 and 6 were identified as male sharks the rest female. The second shark had a streamer tag attached to the right side of its dorsal fin and stayed around the boat the longest. Extremely lucky to see two spectacular full breaches on the bait and decoy from shark 5, a feisty juvenile. hope all enjoyed, many thanks to all, regards.

Location:  Dyer Island [behind]

Sea condition: Rough

Water Temperature: 15.5C

Wind direction: NW

Current direction: SE

Wind speed: 1-4kts

Water visibility: 4-5m

Cloud coverage: 100%

Water depth: 13.5m

Bait Type: Sardine and longfin tuna

Arrival time: 11:12 AM

No of sharks sighted: 6

Respective individual lengths: 2.5m, 2.0m, 2.5m, 2.5m, 3.1m, 3.0m

 

Note: Although the morning looked promising, as soon as the ship launched, the rain began, and continued until we returned.  The sharks arrived quickly to the boat.  The sharks varied somewhat in size, with numbers five and six reaching the three meter mark.  The fifth shark, with its calm nature, was identified as a female.  The sixth shark, a resight from recent trips, was identified as a male, and recognized by distinctive marks along the fin.  Many thanks to all, regards.
