  • Shark cage diving in Gansbaai, South Africa with Marine Dynamics. Experience the exceptional and come face to face with a great white shark!

  • The exact world record white shark is a contested issue, but chances are it is between 6-7m. In Gansbaai, the largest white shark ever caught was at Danger Point and measured up to 5.9m.

  • If you see a white shark in the water don’t panic. Chances are high that the shark has already detected you and isn’t interested. White shark attacks are normally associated with poor visibility, so avoid murky conditions.

  • White sharks have a unique system called a “counter current heat exchange”, which keeps their body  tempreture +/- 7C above the surrounding water temperature.

  • All sharks have an incredibly unique system on the tip of their nose called the “ampillae of Lorenzini”. These are small pores filled with a gel that transmits the electrical currents in the water to the shark’s brain so that it can assess its environment.

  • White sharks give birth to live young (not eggs), and they give birth to 6-8 pups at one time. Pups are usually between 1.0-1.5m in length and are born with teeth.

  • Body language has been a well documented form of shark communication and has identified body arching, jaw gaping, and other postures as specific social tactics.

Sightings:  Great White Sharks, Albatross, Hagfish

Location: Joubertsdam

Water Temperature: Moderate

Visibility: Poor

What a great start of the day! We started our shark adventure not too early in the morning (not for us at least). We got out of the harbour and we could already see that it would be a beautiful sunny day! Once we got to the anchor spot, we geared up and started waiting for the sharks, who didn't make us wait for too long and we got everything we came there for and more! 5 different great white sharks coming to our cage one after another. We started off with Clampy effortlessly gliding through the water and then a bit smaller sharks ranging from 2.5m to 3.3m. Even though we do get out to the shallows to spot some sharks we never say no to the other wildlife willing to come to us! And today we were lucky enough to spot a beautiful Albatross!

Feeling excited and lucky we headed out for our second trip and once again once we got our cage back attached to the side of the boat few minutes later we got ourselves a shark. Any baby animal is cute so is a baby shark! A small female at only around 2.2m came at to us giving us quite a performance showing off her speed. At the end of the trip we got ourselves 6 different great white sharks with the largest being our favourite Clampy, 4.5m female who was very relaxed and gave us nice long passes just next to the cage.  Once everyone was happy with their shark experience we headed back to the harbour to warm up with some hot soup.

And once again we were out at sea for our last but not least trip of the day. Today was certainley our lucky day as just like the previous trips we got the sharks almost straight away, starting off with some smaller specimen - 2.2m and 2.5m females. Clampy came for a visit once again and at the end of the trip a feisty not so little male at around 3.1 m came for our lines. Another entertainment for us was a hagfish feeling friendly and trying to shark cage dive as well. We headed back to the harbour once everyone had their chance in the cage.
